Simhachalam (సింహాచలం)

Today: Simhachalam, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh

On a hill near Visakhapatnam lives Varaha-Narasimha - a form of Vishnu that joins the boar avatar and the lion avatar in one. Here is the wonderful secret: all year long, the deity is covered in a thick, cooling layer of sandalwood paste, so what you see is a smooth, fragrant mound. Only on one single day each year, at the festival of Chandanotsavam, is the paste removed - and thousands of people travel from all over Telugu country for that one precious glimpse of the Lord's true form.
