Kanchipuram (కాంచీపురం)
Today: Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu
Kanchipuram is called the city of a thousand temples - walk down almost any street and a carved gopuram rises above the rooftops. It is one of the seven sacred cities said to give moksha, and it is rare and special because Shiva, Vishnu, and the Goddess all have great ancient temples here. At its heart sits Kamakshi, the gentle mother goddess with a parrot on her hand - and the city is just as famous for its shimmering Kanchi pattu silk sarees, woven for weddings across South India.
