Far beyond the Himalaya rises Kailash, a lonely snow peak shaped almost like a perfect temple - and this, in many tellings, is the home of Shiva and Parvati themselves, with Ganesha and Kartikeya nearby and Nandi waiting at the door. Some traditions call it the very axis of the world, the still point everything else turns around. Pilgrims who make the long, hard journey walk in a great circle around the mountain - but no one ever climbs it, because you do not put your foot on the roof of your parents' house.
