Story
Kartikeya was born to defeat the demon Tarakasura, who had a boon that only Shiva's son could kill him. Born from Shiva's divine energy and raised by six celestial mothers (Krittikas), he grew up as the senapati (commander) of the deva army. In Telugu culture, he is worshipped as Subrahmanya Swamy. The Subrahmanya temple at Mopidevi in Krishna district is famous, as are the Kukke Subrahmanya connections. Skanda Shashti vratam is observed across Telugu families. Many Telugu boys are named Subrahmanya, Karthik, or Kumara after him.
Fun fact
Subrahmanya is also the snake god (Naga Devata) in Telugu tradition. Naga Panchami is connected to his worship, and milk is offered to snake idols at Subrahmanya temples.
