Story
Vichitravirya was the younger of Satyavati's two sons with King Shantanu. His older brother Chitrangada became king first, but he was so proud of his strength that he battled a Gandharva who shared his name — and lost his life, so young Vichitravirya was crowned while still a boy, with Bhishma ruling as his protector. When it was time for him to marry, Bhishma rode to the kingdom of Kashi and won the three princesses — Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika — at their swayamvara, defeating every king there single-handedly. Amba loved another king and was allowed to leave, so Vichitravirya married Ambika and Ambalika. Sadly, the young king was never strong, and he died of illness only a few years later, before any children were born. With his death, the mighty Kuru line had no heir at all — a crisis that his mother Satyavati solved by calling on her first son, the sage Vyasa. In many tellings, Vichitravirya is barely on stage for a moment, yet the entire Mahabharata pivots on his empty throne.
Fun fact
Neither the Pandavas' father nor the Kauravas' father was Vichitravirya's biological son — yet both inherited the kingdom in his name.
