Karma (కర్మ)
Every action has a consequence, in this life or the next.
Karma literally means "action" in Sanskrit, but the concept goes much deeper than that. It is the idea that every single thing you do, say, or even think creates a ripple that comes back to you eventually. Imagine dropping a stone into a pond. The ripples spread outward and eventually bounce back. That is karma. Good actions create good ripples, and harmful actions create harmful ones. It is not about punishment or reward from some cosmic judge. It is more like a natural law, similar to gravity. If you throw a ball up, it comes back down. If you are kind to people, kindness tends to find its way back to you. If you cheat or lie, those consequences catch up sooner or later. In the Mahabharata, karma plays out in dramatic ways. Duryodhana cheats the Pandavas out of their kingdom through a rigged dice game, and that single act of adharma (wrong action) sets off a chain of events that leads to a catastrophic war and his own destruction. Karna, one of the most tragic characters, is a genuinely good person, but curses he received earlier in life catch up to him at the worst possible moment on the battlefield. The Bhagavad Gita offers the most practical teaching about karma. Krishna tells Arjuna: "You have the right to perform your actions, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions." This means you should do the right thing because it is right, not because you expect a reward. In Telugu households, you might hear "manchiga undammu, manchige jarigiddi" (be good, and good things will happen). When parents encourage you to study hard, help others, or tell the truth, they are talking about building good karma. Even small things count: sharing your lunch, being patient with a younger sibling, or cleaning up without being asked. Karma is not about keeping score. It is about understanding that your choices matter and shape the life you are living and the lives you will live in the future.
