Vibhishana

The Demon Who Chose Dharma

Ravana's youngest brother, who begged him to return Sita - and when refused, crossed the ocean to join Rama's side. Proof that dharma matters more than birth.

  • Sanskrit/Telugu name: విభీషణుడు
  • Also known as: The Righteous Rakshasa
  • Symbols: Folded hands, Crown of Lanka

Story

Vibhishana was born a rakshasa in Ravana's own family, but his heart was pure gold. When the brothers did tapas together long ago, Ravana asked for power and Kumbhakarna (accidentally) for sleep - but Vibhishana asked only that his mind never leave the path of dharma. Years later, when Ravana kidnapped Sita, Vibhishana stood up in the court of Lanka, again and again, pleading with his brother to return her and make peace. Ravana finally kicked him out of the court in fury. So Vibhishana did the bravest and hardest thing in the whole epic: he left his home, flew across the ocean, and surrendered to Rama. Rama's generals suspected a spy, but Rama declared his famous vow - he would never turn away anyone who came seeking refuge, even Ravana himself. Vibhishana's inside knowledge of Lanka's secrets helped win the war, and after Ravana fell, Rama crowned Vibhishana king of Lanka. In many tellings he is a chiranjeevi - one of the immortals - still ruling, still righteous.

Fun fact

Rama's acceptance of Vibhishana gave us the "sharanagati" ideal quoted for centuries - and Vibhishana is counted among the seven chiranjeevis, the immortals said to still walk the earth.
