Shurpanakha

Ravana's Sister

Ravana's sister, whose humiliation at Panchavati lit the fuse of the whole war. One rejected proposal, one rash revenge - and the fate of Lanka was sealed.

  • Sanskrit/Telugu name: శూర్పణఖ
  • Also known as: Meenakshi (in some tellings)
  • Symbols: Sharp nails

Story

Shurpanakha - her name means "one with nails like winnowing fans" - was Ravana's sister, a rakshasi who roamed the southern forests freely. One day at Panchavati she saw Rama, beautiful as a god, and decided on the spot to marry him. Taking a lovely form, she proposed - but Rama gently refused, saying he was devoted to Sita alone. She turned to Lakshmana, who also refused. Furious and humiliated, Shurpanakha blamed Sita and lunged at her - and Lakshmana, defending Sita, cut off Shurpanakha's nose and ears. Shrieking, she fled to her brothers, and her wounded pride became the spark of the epic's fire: first her brother Khara attacked with fourteen thousand rakshasas (Rama defeated them all), and when that failed, she went to Ravana himself. Cleverly, she didn't just complain - she described Sita's beauty until Ravana's heart filled with desire. The kidnapping, the war, the fall of Lanka - in many tellings, it all traces back to this one wounded, vengeful heart.

Fun fact

The Telugu and Tamil word for nose - mukku/mookku - hides in the place-name Nasik too: the city on the Godavari is named from "nasika" (nose), where tradition says this famous nose-cutting happened.
