Story

Shani Deva is the son of Surya, the sun god, but the two could not be more different: Surya blazes fast and bright, while Shani moves slowly and quietly, riding a black crow. His name comes from shanaih, meaning "slowly" - the planet Saturn really does take about 30 years to circle the sun! People sometimes fear Shani, but that's not quite fair. He isn't cruel; he is the great teacher of karma, making sure everyone - god, demon, or human - faces the results of their own actions. Even kings and devas go through "Shani periods" that test their patience and honesty. The stories say that Shani's gaze once separated baby Ganesha's head from his body, and that even Rama and the Pandavas felt his testing seasons. But those who stay humble, work hard, and help others find that Shani becomes their greatest protector. On Saturdays, many Telugu families offer sesame oil and til (nuvvulu) at Shani or Hanuman temples - and praying to Hanuman is said to soften Shani's tests, out of respect for Hanuman's strength and devotion.

Fun fact

Shani's name literally means "the slow one" - and real-life Saturn is genuinely the slowest of the classical planets, taking nearly 30 years to orbit the sun.
