Story

Kumbhakarna was Ravana's younger brother, a giant so huge that when he walked, the earth trembled - and so mighty that even the devas feared him. He earned a boon from Brahma through fierce tapas, and he meant to ask for Indra's throne ("Indrasana") - but the nervous gods had Saraswati twist his tongue, and he asked for "Nidrasana" - a bed of sleep - instead! So Kumbhakarna slept for six months at a stretch, waking for just one day to eat mountains of food. When Rama's army reached Lanka, Ravana needed his brother, and waking him was a whole comedy: elephants walked on him, drums thundered, and feasts were piled near his nose. Once awake, Kumbhakarna did something surprising - he told Ravana plainly that kidnapping Sita was adharma and he should return her. But when Ravana refused, Kumbhakarna went to battle anyway, saying a brother doesn't abandon family at war. He fought like a walking mountain until Rama's arrows brought him down. His story asks a hard, interesting question: is loyalty still good when the cause is wrong?

Fun fact

Kumbhakarna's six-month sleep was a cosmic typo - he meant to ask Brahma for Indra's throne (Indrasana) but his twisted tongue said Nidrasana, "the seat of sleep."
