Ujjain (ఉజ్జయిని)
Today: Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
Ancient Ujjain, on the Shipra river, is the city of Mahakaleshwar - Shiva as the Lord of Time itself, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, whose famous early-morning aarti is unlike any other. This is also where young Krishna and his poor friend Sudama went to school together at the ashram of guru Sandipani, fetching firewood and learning side by side - a friendship Krishna never forgot, even as a king. Ujjain is one of the four Kumbh Mela cities, where in many tellings drops of the nectar of immortality once fell.
