Somnath (సోమనాథం)

Today: Somnath, Gujarat

On the shore of the western sea stands Somnath, honored as the very first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. In many tellings, it was built by Chandra, the moon himself: cursed to fade away, he prayed to Shiva here, and Shiva let him wax and wane instead of vanishing - which is why the moon still grows and shrinks in the sky. Over the centuries the temple was destroyed again and again, and every single time the people built it back - Somnath is the temple that would not die.
