Panchavati (పంచవటి)

Today: Nashik, Maharashtra

Panchavati, "the place of five banyan trees," sat on the banks of the beautiful Godavari - the same river that flows through Andhra Pradesh before reaching the sea. Here Lakshmana built a cozy cottage, and for a while the three exiles were happy. But this is also where the trouble began: a magical golden deer appeared, Rama chased it, and while Sita was alone, Ravana came in disguise and carried her away.
