In Madurai, something wonderful is true: the goddess rules first. Meenakshi - Parvati as the fish-eyed warrior queen - reigns over the city with Sundareshwara, a form of Shiva, at her side, and every evening the temple gently celebrates them as a royal couple. Her temple's towering gopurams are covered top to bottom in thousands of brightly painted gods, demons, and heroes - like whole storybooks climbing into the sky.
