Ahobilam (అహోబిలం)

Today: Ahobilam, Andhra Pradesh

Hidden in the wild Nallamala forest are nine shrines to Narasimha, the lion-man avatar of Vishnu - some easy to reach, some at the end of steep jungle trails that feel like a real adventure. In many tellings, this is where Narasimha came to rest after bursting from the pillar to save little Prahlada, and the name comes from the gods gasping "Aho! Bila!" - "Oh, what a cave! What strength!" Walking from shrine to shrine here, you can almost feel the forest still humming with the lion's roar.
