Story

Rukmini, princess of Vidarbha, fell in love with Krishna purely from hearing stories of him — his wisdom, his kindness, his adventures — without ever meeting him. But her proud brother Rukmi arranged her marriage to Shishupala, Krishna's sworn enemy. So Rukmini did something wonderfully bold for a princess of her time: she wrote Krishna a letter, sent through a trusted brahmin, saying that she had chosen him as her husband and telling him exactly when and where to find her — at the temple of Devi on the morning of the wedding. Krishna raced to Vidarbha, swept her into his chariot before the assembled kings could blink, and defeated the armies that chased them; he spared the furious Rukmi only because Rukmini begged mercy for her brother. As chief queen of Dwaraka, Rukmini is honored in many tellings as the avatar of Lakshmi, matching Krishna's Vishnu. Telugu families love the story of the Tulabharam: when Krishna was playfully "weighed" against gold and heaps of treasure could not tip the scale, Rukmini placed a single tulasi leaf offered with love — and the scale came down at once. Her wedding story is retold at many temple kalyanams, celebrating a heroine who chose her own destiny with a pen instead of a sword.

Fun fact

Rukmini may be history's most famous love-letter writer — her message to Krishna, preserved in the Bhagavatam, is one of the oldest love letters in world literature.
