Sri Rama Navami (శ్రీ రామ నవమి)

Chaitra · Mar-Apr · Telugu/South

The birthday of Lord Rama, celebrated with particular intensity in Telugu states. The highlight for Telugu families is the Sitarama Kalyanam at Bhadrachalam temple on the banks of the Godavari River, where the divine wedding of Rama and Sita is re-enacted with elaborate rituals. The state government of Telangana sends the ceremonial silk clothes and pearls (Mutyala Talambralu) for the wedding ceremony, and the event is broadcast live on every Telugu TV channel. Millions watch from home, and attending in person at least once is a dream for many Telugu families. On the morning of Sri Rama Navami, families decorate their home altars with pictures of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. Many observe a fast until noon, which is traditionally believed to be Rama's birth time. At midday, celebrations peak with aarti, and families prepare panakam (a refreshing drink made from jaggery, water, lemon, and cardamom) and vada pappu (soaked moong dal with grated coconut). These are distributed as prasadam at temples and among neighbors. Devoted families read the Sundarakanda, the fifth chapter of the Ramayana that describes Hanuman's journey to Lanka, on this day. Temple processions with Rama's idol are carried through the streets to the accompaniment of traditional nadaswaram music. For kids, this festival is a wonderful entry point into the Ramayana, as temples and families retell the story of Rama's life from birth to his triumphant return to Ayodhya.
