Sankranti / Pongal (మకర సంక్రాంతి)
Pushya · Jan 13-15 · Telugu/South
THE festival in Andhra and Telangana, bigger than Diwali for many Telugu families. It is a three-day celebration that marks the harvest season. Day one is Bhogi, when families literally burn old, worn-out things in a bonfire at dawn, symbolizing out with the old and in with the new. Day two is Sankranti itself, the main day, when the sun begins its northward journey (Uttarayana). Families draw enormous, intricate muggu (rangoli) patterns in front of their homes using rice flour and colored powders, sometimes covering the entire street. Kids and adults fly kites all day, and the sky fills with color. Homes prepare special foods like ariselu (jaggery rice cakes), bobbatlu (sweet stuffed flatbread), and fresh pongal rice cooked until the pot overflows as a sign of abundance. Day three is Kanuma, dedicated to honoring cattle. Farmers decorate their cows and bulls with garlands, paint their horns, and feed them special meals as thanks for their role in agriculture. In some villages, Hari Dasu singers go door to door singing devotional songs. In Tamil Nadu, the festival is called Pongal and centers on the ritual of boiling rice in milk outdoors until it overflows, which represents prosperity. Sankranti is one of the few Hindu festivals calculated by the solar calendar rather than the lunar one, so it falls on roughly the same date (January 14 or 15) every year.
Why it matters
Marks the sun's northward journey (Uttarayana) and the end of winter. It is one of the few Hindu festivals based on the solar calendar rather than the lunar calendar. For Telugu families, it is THE harvest festival, a time of gratitude for the earth's abundance and a fresh start for the new year.
