Bonalu (బోనాలు)
Ashadha · Jul-Aug · Telugu/South
A distinctly Telangana festival with an energy unlike anything else in Indian culture. During Bonalu, women dress in their finest sarees, carry beautifully decorated clay pots (bonam) filled with cooked rice, jaggery, and curd on their heads, topped with neem leaves and turmeric, and walk in procession to temples of the Mother Goddess, particularly Mahankali and Yellamma temples. The streets come alive with Potharaju dancers, who represent Yellamma's brother and perform intense dances while lashing themselves with ropes, their bodies covered in turmeric paste. Dhol drummers pound out driving rhythms, and the entire community pours into the streets. The festival originated in Hyderabad and the Telangana region as an offering to the Mother Goddess during times of plague and epidemic. The word "bonam" comes from "bhojanam" (food), and the offering of cooked food to the goddess is a thanksgiving for protecting the community from disease and misfortune. The major celebrations happen at Golconda Fort's Jagadamba temple, Ujjaini Mahankali temple in Secunderabad, and Lal Darwaza Mahankali temple in Old City Hyderabad. A key ritual is the Rangam, where a woman in a state of divine possession delivers prophecies about the coming year. Bonalu is raw, ecstatic, and intensely community-driven. It is one of the most identity-defining festivals of Telangana, and its revival after Telangana became a separate state in 2014 has made it even more culturally significant.
